Community invited to active transportation discussion Oct. 23
Biking and walking are healthy and environmentally friendly ways to get around and engage with our community. However, local challenges prevent the Boothbay Peninsula from fully realizing its active transportation potential. Join us Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Boothbay Region YMCA Winslow Community Room for a conversation about safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists, and what we as a community can do to improve them.
“Beyond mere exercise, active transportation is an integrated and sustainable approach to transportation that enhances personal health, community well-being, and environmental quality,” said Roger Matthews, owner of Pedego Boothbay Harbor, and an event partner. “We hope people can join to better understand the importance of making room for it to improve the health and safety for residents and visitors alike.”
In 2023, the Boothbay Region Climate Action Team (BRCAT) and Sunrise Ecologic held a workshop with residents to help enroll Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor in the state’s Community Resilience Partnership program. The meeting identified key priorities for community action and climate resilience. Residents expressed strong concerns about limited access for emissions-friendly transportation like bike paths and walkways, and safety for people using them.
Now, hear updates on progress and remaining challenges, and take part in a discussion with local leaders and advocates working to improve active transportation options in alignment with the towns’ municipal actions on climate priorities. Participants include Boothbay Region YMCA, Pedego Boothbay Harbor, Sunrise Ecologic, and BRCAT representatives, who will share updates on current progress.
This event is also an opportunity for residents to develop a community voice to move forward planning and funding priorities for safer biking and walking access. All residents are encouraged to attend, especially those who walk, bike, or would like to see safer and more accessible driving alternatives in the region.
“Supporting walking and biking in Boothbay means investing in health, sustainability, and connecting us to the natural beauty of our region. It’s about making our towns more livable and accessible for everyone,” said Boothbay YMCA CEO Andy Hamblett, a partner for the event. “I hope those that attend, bring their stories, their concerns, and their ideas. This isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about creating a shared vision.”
Share your voice to help shape the path forward toward safer, greener transportation for our community!
