Boothbay region schools hosted their Spring Concert May 27 in the elementary school gym. Over 150 guests showed up to hear performances from the fifth and sixth grade cadet band, fifth and sixth grade chorus, seventh and eighth grade Concert Band, seventh and eighth grade chorus and the high school wind ensemble. In all, 54 students sang and played instruments. The two choral groups combined for one song, “Shake It Off,” a popular Taylor Swift song, with choral arrangement by Roger Emerson. A crowd favorite, it featured a Mackenzie Charlton solo.
Instrumental music teacher Jeff Waldrop conducted fifth and sixth grade cadet band members through five songs: "When the Saints Come Marching In” (Arr. Higgins), “Once I Had A Sweetheart” (Arr. Story), “Cindy” (Arr. Story), “Shenandoah” (Arr. Sheldon) and student favorite “Alien Invasion” (Arr. Gorham).
BRES music teacher Nancy Cole played piano and led the fifth and sixth grade chorus through “When I Grow Up/Naughty” (Arr. Huff) with solo performances by Violet Baldwin and Lyriah Barbeau. Shauna Ytak, Peyton Sprague, Evelyn Lessner, Isabella Page, Avery Peck, Ella Clark, Lynne Moran and Sheyenne Upham also performed solos during "Carry The Light” (Beck) and “Die With A Smile” (Arr. Brymer).
The seventh and eighth grade chorus performed an up tempo compilation of Highlights from Hamilton the Musical (Arr. DeSpain). Samantha Colby, Sarah Moran, Corinne Rogers, Beatrice Wormwood, Sophia Gatnar, Abby Locke-Smith and Elise Wilson sang in breakouts. The set was completed with “Winds of Change” (Arr. Fukuda) and “When Will My Life Begin” (Arr. Huff).
The seventh and eighth grade concert band, led by Waldrop, played “March On A Welsh Air” (Arr. Edmondson) and two Robert Smith song compositions: “Daybreak” and “Morpheus.”
BRHS Wind Ensemble concluded the concert with Waldrop conducting and accompanying on bass. The group played “Of Distant Peaks” (Sheldon), “General Green Concert March” (Edmondson), “Old English Hymn” (Swearingen) and “Maya: The Lost Civilization” (Story) before ending with a rousing percussions-focused rendition of “Afterburn” (Standbridge) performed by the entire ensemble and senior Neal Baldwin delighted the audience with his talents on drums.
