Cemetery District revises bylaws, elects officials
Boothbay Region Cemetery District trustees on June 4 began the process of revising their bylaws. The changes largely focused on cleaning up language, reorganization and updating procedures.
Suggested additions included a mandate to keep a physical copy of all district records at the Boothbay Town Office, and a provision for the upkeep of veterans’ graves as determined by state law Title 13, 1101. In Maine, any cemetery association that operates a public burying ground must keep veteran grave sites in “good condition and repair” from May 1 to Sept. 30 of each year. This includes trimming the grass and clearing debris from the grave and its marker.
Discussion was also had about the district’s stance on buying back and reselling grave lots, and if that should be included in the updated bylaws.
Revisions are still ongoing and a final draft will be voted upon once completed.
In other business, Patty Minerich was reelected treasurer, and Sue Hochchin as secretary. Sara Fahnley stepped down as president and was replaced by Bernard “Skip” MacPhee.
