Harbor Theater partners with BRTV
Harbor Theater and Boothbay Region TV and Media Center have a lot in common, beginning with their missions. While Harbor Theater strives to be a cultural asset in the community through films and related events that educate, inspire and entertain, BRTV aims to inspire, educate, and facilitate video and filmmaking. How natural that the two non-profit organizations should work together to provide the community with the best possible access to film media!
The focus for Harbor Theater is to provide popular first-run movies as well as classic, art, independent, documentary, and educational films. BRTV’s content ranges from live and archived government and local event coverage to talk shows, short films, performances, and regional promotions.
By partnering, the two organizations benefit from each other’s strengths and resources. For example, BRTV produces a monthly program called “Spotlight on Harbor Theater” which allows the theater to promote its upcoming movies and special film events. Executive Director Lynn Thompson frequently invites guests to join her in the “Spotlight” and talk about “behind the scenes” topics like volunteering, fundraising, operations, and more. Recent “Spotlights” have featured interviews with Board President Jeff Long, Concessions staff, and community members who volunteer at the theater.
In return, Harbor Theater offers BRTV a spot to run its promotional video as a big-screen ad before every movie, and the opportunity to use the theater’s 175-seat auditorium for special events. Last September, BRTV’s Station Manager Lang Sheppard and volunteer Robert Jordan, also Harbor Theater’s technical director, compiled 18 videos made by prominent photographer Peter Southwick starring Boothbay Harbor residents, then showed them on the big screen at the theater to a standing-room-only audience.
Both organizations are currently working together on plans to create a student-focused filmmaking project and festival to involve local youth in making and presenting videos.
Harbor Theater and BRTV are also 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that depend for their operating funds on the support of community individuals, businesses, and organizations.
