Legion presents US Coast Guardsman first veterans' scholarship
The Charles E. Sherman Jr. American Legion Post 36 in Boothbay recently awarded a $500 scholarship for a veteran returning to higher education. Alejandra Claro received the scholarship from a committee searching to reward a veteran in their educational endeavor. The committee found one stationed at the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Boothbay Harbor.
The scholarship's purpose is to assist with purchasing items not ordinarily part of a college scholarship. "Typically, grants and scholarships pay for books and classes," said committee member Chris Goodwin. "This pays for those small expenses like gas and babysitters so a vet can find the time to go back to school."
Last year, the local legion received an inheritance. Legion officials discussed how to use the proceeds and decided a portion should go towards a scholarship. The committee proposed a scholarship for a veteran looking to further their education. "We couldn't find a retired vet so we opened it up to active duty vets, and found one at the Boothbay Harbor Coast Guard base."
Goodwin along with Cathy Moroney, David Patch, Sue Burge and Brad Drummond are committee members.
This is an annual scholarship, and interested applicants should contact the Legion Post in Boothbay.
